$4M in endowments to support Shenango LaunchBox, economic development in Sharon

Two new endowments totaling $4 million will increase economic development in western Pennsylvania through a partnership between Penn State and the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH, with support of the Sharon community. Expanding the region’s innovation, entrepreneurial and business support offerings, the endowments will establish a Penn State LaunchBox and a fund to support business owners in Sharon.

WPSU-TV will televise “The Investment,” the final round of the Invent Penn State Inc.U Competition, at 9 p.m. on May 16 and again at 6 p.m. on May 21. During “The Investment,” six Penn State student startups compete for up to $30,000 in funding that will help advance their companies.

Bonslaver graduates Penn State Berks and embarks on career as an entrepreneur

After Nathan Bonslaver graduates from Penn State Berks on May 7, he will be closing the door on one chapter while opening the door to another. Not only is Bonslaver the co-founder of CarToCamp, which provides universally fitting SUV sleeping platforms for car camping, but he also was one of six selected to participate in the Invent Penn State Summer Founders Program, a 13-week accelerator program that provides funding and resources to develop startups.

Gift to support Penn State Law interns through Happy Valley LaunchBox

Tom Sharbaugh, professor of practice at Penn State Law and founding director of the Entrepreneur Assistance Clinic (EAC), along with his wife, Kristin R. Hayes, have stepped forward with a gift of $100,000 to support EAC student internships, which will be named in honor of outgoing Penn State President Eric J. Barron. The University will contribute a one-to-one match of the gift through the Economic Development Incentive Matching Program, yielding a $200,000 endowment.

Penn State SBDC program prepares businesses for long-term success

This spring, the Penn State Small Business Development Center wrapped up the second annual cohort of its Business Plan Bootcamp. The eight-week accelerator program, sponsored by SCORE Mentors of Central PA, led participating businesses through the full journey of writing a business plan using LivePlan, a business planning, cash forecasting, and financial performance tracking tool for small businesses and startups.
